How to Create and Publish a Blog Post in WordPress

| By Matt Jelfs

If you’re working as a content contributor or blogger, here’s a simple, step-by-step guide for creating and publishing blog posts in WordPress.

This guide is ideal for anyone who needs to write and publish posts — without having to manage the whole site.

Step 1: Log In to WordPress

Go to your site’s login page (usually yourwebsite.com/wp-admin) and log in using your account credentials.

Step 2: Create a New Post

  • From the WordPress dashboard, click Posts > Add New.
  • Enter your Post Title at the top.
  • Start writing in the editor. WordPress uses a block editor, where each paragraph, image, or element is its own “block.”

Step 3: Use Basic Formatting (Blocks)

If you need to, use the “+” button (top left or inline) to insert content blocks such as:

  • Paragraph – for normal text (default block)
  • Heading – use H2 for sections, H3 for sub-sections
  • Image – upload or choose from the media library
  • List – bullet or numbered lists
  • Link – highlight text and click the 🔗 icon to insert a URL

Step 4: Best Practices for Writing Posts

  • Use short paragraphs for easy reading
  • Add relevant headings to break up content
  • Use images wisely and not just for the sake of it
  • Optimise images so they do not have large file sizes (max around 200kb should be plenty unless it’s a photography or other visually-focused blog).
  • Stick to clean formatting — avoid unnecessary colors or styles. You r website is already configured to apply the right styles to paragraph text and headings.
  • Preview your post before publishing to check layout and spacing

Step 5: Assign a Category and Tags

On the right-hand Post Settings sidebar:

  • Choose a Category from the existing list (Authors cannot create new ones)
  • Add relevant Tags to describe your post topics (you can create new tags)
  • Scroll to the Featured Image section in the sidebar
  • Click Set featured image and upload or select from the Media Library
  • Optimise images so they do not have large file sizes (max around 200kb should be plenty unless it’s a photography or other visually-focused blog)
  • (Optionally) add Alt Text for accessibility and SEO

Step 7: Preview Your Post

Click the Preview button (top right) and choose “Preview in new tab.”

Review for:

  • Clear headings and structure
  • Proper spacing and alignment
  • Correct image display and links

Step 8: Saving and Publishing Your Post

  • If you want to come back to your post later, before publishing it, click Save draft.
  • When you’re ready to publish, click the Publish button (top right)
  • Click Publish again in the confirmation popup

Your post is now live on the site!

Step 9: Editing a Post Later

  • Go to Posts > All Posts
  • Click your post title to edit
  • Make your changes and click Update to save

Final Thoughts

This process keeps your content workflow clean and simple. If you need a new category or have any questions, just reach out and we’ll help you out.
